This is the Black feminist freshman orientation

College, or whatever path chosen after high school, is important because it provides

the space for people to explore who they are. This time often results in new challenges including adjusting to a new place, expectations, and responsibilities. Many first-year students feel alone and would benefit from the support of an affirming community. The Black Feminist Freshman Orientation says no more isolation!

We understand the importance of culturally relevant and meaningful support. The kind that doesn't go anywhere. We recognize college as an initiatory phase that does not have to be isolating.

We know that when people enter new life stages, they should be made aware of their options, know what's expected of them, and experience abundant love.

We look to the leadership of Black Feminist thinkers, writers, and waymakers who for decades have used gathering together as a portal for healing and progress.

We know that everything is better with community and will gather to speak life and lessons over these young people positioned to enter their first year of college. We will explore topics such as Time Management, Black Feminism, Knowing Your Body, Scholarships and Financial Planning, Mental Health and Healing, Using Your Voice, Black Activism on Campus, Pleasure and more. All with the explicit intention of showing the attendees what is possible and what is to come.

Toni Morrison said, "The function of freedom is to free somebody else." We know that attending college in 2020 is a privilege that many will not see. The function of the BFFO is to incubate attendees so that they are best equipped to recognize their freedom, claim it for themselves and use it to free someone else.

The Black Feminist Freshman Orientation is about:

Affirmation. Community. Support. Interdependence.
